Mythology/ Folklore

The plant was thought to have received its sweet scent when Mary washed the Christ child's clothes and was looking for a place to hang them to dry. She chose the lavendar bush, and when the sun and wind had dried the clothes and she went to get them, they smelled sweet and clean.

History/ Modern Use

The name lavendar comes from the Latin word 'lavare,' “to wash.” This stemmed from the Roman custom of using the leaves and flowers of lavendar to scent the bath water, a custom that is still practiced today.

William Turner's Herball, written in 1551, suggests that “flowers of lavendar quilted in a cap, comfort the brain very well.”
